THE PRINTS:
All the above prices are for un-mounted and unframed, matte finish prints. The prints are made on an Epson 7600 inkjet printer using heavy weight archival paper and “Ultrachrome” archival inks. If you avoid touching the printed surface, don’t hang it in direct sunlight, and keep it in places with normal (for humans) climate control, they should last for many years without fading.
The best way to protect the print is to frame it behind UV protective glass – but this can be very expensive, and make it more difficult to see and appreciate the image.
What we do in most cases is to mount the print on black foam board, borderless, with no glass. This is cheap and easy to hang, and the prints look so much better if they are not covered with glass – even in bad light or bad lighting angles. They are a little vulnerable to damage, but in general they do quite well.
Recommendations for mounting prints on foam board:
1. We mount the prints on good quality 1/2” foam board. Do not use 3/16” board – it will curl for sure if there are any humidity changes (as in a dance studio or in the state of Florida). We use board that is black (both the foam and the paper), which really looks very nice if you cut the print to borderless. The best board is Gatorfoam, in our opinion, but I have had good luck with Hunt and Beinfang as well.
2. Then we coat the print with a spray on lacquer that is designed for protecting inkjet prints (Premier Art “Print Shield” or Lumijet “ImageShield”). Matte finish prints like this one are always a little delicate and easy to scuff or scratch, but the coating helps a lot, and it adds some UV protection. Even in commercial space with a lot of activity the prints actually do very well. And the coating makes it much safer to remove dust.
3. The problems that we encounter the most with prints mounted this way are that the corners and edges of the foam board are easy to damage if dropped (and frequently damaged in shipping – so we prefer that you arrange for mounting locally). And also, the prints are extremely light weight – so they can be blown off the wall by wind or even people moving by quickly. We make hangers that tape to the back of the board out of filament packing tape reinforced with a piece of aluminum wire, and then we secure the bottom of the print with double stick foam “poster tape."
EQUIPMENT:
Most photographs are taken with a Canon EOS 1Ds or 1Ds Mark II digital camera (up to 16.7 megapixels), or a Mamiya RZ67 or 7II medium format film camera. Image quality will vary considerably based on lighting conditions when a photograph was taken and camera used, so all photos may not be suitable for enlargement to these sizes. But that can be dicussed on a picture by picture basis.
SIZING AND DIMENSIONS:
Print sizes and borders were chosen to correspond to common framing and mounting configurations. If you want another size or configuration just ask – if our printer can do it, we will do it for the price of the nearest listed size. Also, due to the varying camera formats certain photographs willnot fit into the sizes above. Again we will price those images to the nearest corresponding print size listed above.
SHIPPING:
Purchased prints will be mailed to you in a 4 inch diameter, heavy weight mailing tube. Postage for standard delivery in the continental US is included in the above price
